2004 Syrah SE Fairplay

Notes from the winemaker:

Most of the grapes used for this wine came from the upper 8 rows of Jim Brown's Syrah block located in the Fairplay AVA.  The fruit was completely ripe when picked. The grapes were hand sorted and gently crushed. The fermentation was delayed for two days by keeping the must cold under 60 degrees F. We fermented this wine in our 2 ton fermentation tank, punching down by hand 3 times per day.
The wine was aged in French Oak for 23 months before bottling.

This wine has a deep color and an aroma of cocoa and vanilla combined with tobacco and spice. This well balanced wine is very dry with layers of flavor of black cherry, dark plum, cassis, coffee and tobacco.  The fruit flavor intensifies in the mid-palate becoming very complex, picking up some herbal nuances. The wine finishes with a long and lingering finish adding baking type spicy flavors combined with smoky and almost meaty notes. This is a big wine worthy of aging for several years for optimum quality.
