primitivo

Winemaker's Notes:

Primitivo, which is also known as Zingarello is the major growing grape of Apulia in Southern Italy. Zingarello makes a heavy strong wine with the alcoholic potency of port. DNA testing has confirmed that Primitivo is genetically related to California's Zinfandel. Based on DNA profiling, it has been theorized that both Primitivo and Zinfandel are clones of the Croatian variety Crljenak.

This is the second year that we are making this Estate Primitivo. The grapes for this wine came from David's Vineyard situated on a steep slope facing southwest. Primitivo is one of the varieties that grow exceptionally well in our vineyards.

This wine was made in a "Submerged Cap" Fermentation Tank. It was aged in French and American oak barrels for a full year. This wine has deep black cherry, plum and blackberry aromas carrying all the way to the flavor. In the mid-palate it shows good structure and complexity with well balanced acidity. It has a lingering finish of black cherry, mocha and spice.
